Nwodo, ex-presidential hopeful, dies in London

Former presidential candidate of the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC), Chief Joe Nwodo, is dead.

Immediate past President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, stated yesterday that his elder brother died in a London hospital on Wednesday while suffering gastro-intestinal problems.

“He was supposed to be operated on, but the medical experts could not operate on him because he had heart problems. That is the way it is. The family will make an official statement later on the development,” he told The Guardian.

The deceased also contested the governorship seat of Enugu State. He was among the governorship candidates disqualified by the military government of Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (rtd.) as a result of the fierce contest between him and his rival.

Following his disqualification, his younger brother, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, replaced him and was subsequently elected Governor of Enugu State in 1993.
